My poor sweet baby has been so sick since turning one. We have had our first cold and then some flu bug got all of us. And now something so scary hit her.
She started running a fever 6 days ago and no one could really figure out if it was just teething or if she was getting sick. So we waited for 2 days and she seemed fine just a fever now and then nothing serious. Then on Thursday she ran one that was 103.9 it took 2 doses of Tylenol to get it to break. When it broke it was gone and she didn't have another one. But I called her Ped and they wanted to see her in the AM first thing. Got there, they couldn't find nothing. They sent us for blood work just to be on the safe side with the weekend and all coming. After 2 1/2 hours at the hospital waiting to do the blood work and getting home and her still be normal as ever, we get a call that the lab work came back normal and that her iron was low. (we already new the last part.)
Saturday I take the kids out shopping and we come home to a frantic message from her doctor telling us to take her to Wolfson Children's hospital and get them to do another cbc and blood culture and urine test on her. Her blood culture from the local hospital show that she had Alpha-Hemolytic Streptococcus and that it was super serious and things needed to move fast. Alpha strep is linked to bacterial pneumonia, otitis media and meningitis. We get the hospital they do all their test and then we find out they can't find out anything either. They are dumb founded why she isn't super sick and why she isn't acting like a child who could have something seriously wrong with her. They come in and tell us that her blood work came back clean and her white blood count was great and her urine was great and that they were going to give her a shot of antibiotics and send us on our way. That we need to follow up on Monday with her ped and they would go from there. We would also find out the blood culture results then as well.(takes 24 hours to grow)
Today at the peds they tell us that it showed up again and that they were going to start antibiotics and that if she runs any more fevers we are to call again. They to are surprised at the way she is acting. She runs every where and is eating normally and nursing like a newborn. So they are puzzled by it as well.
I am so glad this weekend is over and that after the 10 days of meds her blood should be back to normal..
